There are many tarot quizzes out there, but this (Which Tarot Court Card Are You?) is the best I’ve come across. It is based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and is found at students-of-tarot.com, which is fun site.

According to the quiz, I am the Page of Pentacles. I’ve always had fond feelings for this Page!

Fellow tarot enthusiasts, here’s a great find! I highly recommed the DVD, 21st Century Tarot with James Wanless, Ph.D, Episode 1: Tarot into the Light. (Running Time: 55 minutes. Price: $24.95.) In this video, Anastasia Haysler, host of the Tarot Pathways podcast, interviews James Wanless, creator of Voyager Tarot, at Fields Book Store in San Francisco, California. There are also clips from Wanless’s presentation at the 2007 World Tarot Day event, hosted by Tarot-To-Go.

I have been fortunate to see James Wanless speak at the Bay Area Tarot Symposium a couple times, and I was so happy to be able to purchase this DVD to watch at home. This will no doubt also make him more accessible to those who would otherwise have to travel great distances to see him. Wanless is a delightful, engaging speaker, and I appreciate the way he promotes tarot for the mainstream. In the video, he explains that today, reading the tarot is no longer considered fortune telling. Unlike the old world where one would consult a psychic authority figure, a person today can be empowered to use their own cards as a tool for their own “fortune creation.” Wanless emphasizes that in the 21st century, “it’s power back to the people.” In this episode, there is even a segment in which he talks about how as a corporate trainer he uses the tarot in order to initiate communication between staff members and to encourage creativity.

Anastasia Haysler is a great interviewer. She radiates warmth and enthusiasm and asks great questions, but like all good interviewers, she lets her guest speak.

At the end of the episode, Wanless gives Haysler a two-card reading, and it’s a treat to see his conversational style.

I can’t wait for Episode 2 to come out!

Aeclectic Tarot is featuring the Corto Maltese Tarot as the Tarot of the Week. This deck is based on Italian illustrator, Hugo Pratt’s comic book character, Corto Maltese.

I wasn’t familiar with the character Corto Maltese and found it interesting that The Hierophant card, shown on Aeclectic, depicted a Jewish scene. I googled Hugo Pratt and found an interesting article on Corto Maltese by Ivan Pintor. Here’s an excerpt that sheds light on the Jewish-themed Hierophant:

The story begins when a sailor from Cornwall disembarks in Gibraltar and meets a beautiful gypsy girl from Seville. And continues in the cove of Valeta. A house with an arcaded courtyard and wrought-iron grilles between St John Street and Kingsway, is the setting for the birth of their son on the morning of 10 July 1887. His father is said to have disappeared off the coast of Chile near Iquique, to have turned up in Adelaide after a shady brawl, or even to have been murdered on the Pearl River. His mother, however, took a house in the Juderia in Cordoba to bring up the little boy. He played on the banks of the Guadalquivir and was taught by Rabbi Ezra Toledano. One day, near the Mezquita, a friend of his mother’s walked up to him -by then he was in his early teens- to read his palm. Imagine his surprise when he found out that he had no fate line. The boy must have run to his house to look for the cut-throat razor that had belonged to his father. With it, he drew a line on the palm of his right hand. Shortly afterwards, Toledano took him to the Jewish school in Valeta. Corto Maltese -as he was known- surfaced five years later, in 1904, at the height of the Russo-Japanese War in Manchuria, accompanied by a young reporter called Jack London; at 26 he was rescued in the Pacific after being tied to a plank and thrown into the sea by a mutinous crew. After that, for the first quarter of this century, he wandered through more ports than any other adventurer.

It’s closet cleaning time—time to purge. Summer vacation has begun, and there’s no more excuses. I start with my teaching files and get three grocery bags of recyling. I weed out the bookshelves again. It seems they’re just as full, though I guess there’s a little more room to walk around the bed. I fill the trunk and backseat of the car with donations—old clothes, lamps, purses and so on. Then things get a little tougher. There’s that stack of high school yearbooks, notes passed during class in 6th grade, my Bat Mitzvah practice folder, way too many photos…. I’m about 80% ready to toss it all, can already anticipate what it will be like to open a closet door without things tumbling out. There’s that 20%, though—that habit of holding on. And then a thought occurs to me. If I were to drop dead tomorrow, my husband would have one hell of a time cleaning up after me. (He is appalled at the suggestion.) I stuff the garbage can with the unrecyclables and tape a tip to the lid for the guys who take away the heavy load. Today I pull these cards: Death and The Four of Pentacles.

I just got an email from Bob Patterson who recently opened Carte Karuta. What fun! Lots of unique tarot decks, and some old favorites. I also enjoyed looking at the fortune telling decks, the tarocchi decks and playing cards from different countries. Check it out!
